The story of the Lärchenhof

For many of our guests from near and far, enjoying a rejuvenating break here at the Lärchenhof has become a cherished tradition. Our top priority continues to be our personal commitment to service and hospitality. Discover how the Lärchenhof has transformed from a guest house with 20 beds to a luxury 5-star hotel, whilst retaining its family charm and personal touch.

A look back at the years 1968 – 1979

1968 Martin Unterrainer built a guest house with 20 beds on a pocket of land belonging to the Backstätthof farm. By this point he had already constructed a ski lift, which was the only means of transport towards the summit in Erpfendorf at the time.
1969 After marrying Burgi, the pair began the uphill struggle of turning the guest house into a hotel. Their tireless dedication and entrepreneurial courage allowed them to expand to 40 more luxurious beds.
1971 Construction of the heated outdoor swimming pool with sunbathing area.
1972 The hotel grew to accommodate 70 beds and a new 200 seater restaurant.
1973 Addition of a ski rental shop, alongside the expansion of the ski school and kindergarten.
1974 Creation of complex with three outdoor tennis courts and a clubhouse.
1975 Construction of the Birkenhaus with gift and sports shop.
1976 Extension of the existing lift and construction of another draglift.
1978/79 A further milestone was reached with the construction of the magnificent indoor swimming pool.

Modernisation of the kitchen, and construction of the elegant dining room.

1988 The luxurious Schlösslhof with 40 enchanting suites was added to the complex; reconfiguration of the hotel hall and creation of a comfortable and convivial bar.

A look back at the years 1990 – 1999

1990 The ski school office in the Landhaus moved to the end of the guest car park to make way for an exclusive beauty salon. The architecture, which gives the building its sporty character, is particularly notable.
1992 Completion of the tennis hall with three indoor courts and a café (also accessible underground).
1993 In appreciation of our employees’ constant commitment, we built a comfortable and functional staff house.
1994 Several plans were implemented, including the construction of a new underground car park at Schlösslhof (along with underground links to all of the buildings).
1997 Official opening of the Golf & Country Club Lärchenhof (approx. 500 m from the hotel). Alongside the 9-hole tournament course, it offers a golf academy with 6-hole academy course, a covered driving range and chipping and putting greens. The academy is run by renowned golf instructor Dietmar Posch. Clubhouse with Pro Shop and exclusive sports items.
1998 New plans were drawn up, and the entrance to Haupthaus was covered over in order to protect guests against the weather on arrival & departure. An open fire was built into the restaurant foyer, a number of rooms were renovated, the offices behind reception expanded, and new computers and digital technology installed. In the autumn, sufficient progress had been made on plans for the Jungbrunnen building, so work was started on constructing this large-scale project.
1999 The Jungbrunnen project was completed and opened after a difficult construction phase during which the early onset of winter brought strong winds, requiring extreme dedication by all the contractors involved. Nevertheless, it resulted in a dreamy oasis of rest and relaxation, which lives up to the name Jungbrunnen (meaning fountain of youth in German). A traditional Finnish log cabin sauna and outdoor hot tub complete this remarkable complex. Unlike everywhere else, no children are allowed in this haven of tranquillity. The project was Martin and Burgi Unterrainer’s way of marking the new millennium. The Jungbrunnen suites and maisonettes are also located in these buildings. These are distinguished by their particularly spacious and luxurious design at dimensions of 70 – 125 m² – some are even fitted with a steam bath.

A look back at the years 2001 – 2009

2001 The first Gertraud Gruber beauty farm in Austria was developed at the Lärchenhof. The picture-perfect building by the Schlösslhof is another forward-looking innovation – offering all the beauty and wellbeing facilities you could possibly need across an area of over 600 m². The golf academy was taken over by the professional team of Mike Burrows, Michaela Magerle and Wolfgang Bauer.
2003 Our golf course was upgraded and soon recognised as the second most attractive 9-hole course in Austria. In addition, we extended our hotel dining room.
2004 Restructuring of the hotel driveway and car park.
2005 Construction of the tennis academy managed by Daniel Hübner-Schluifer.

2007 Opening of the new clubhouse at Lärchenhof golf course, celebrations to mark 10 years of the GCC Lärchenhof.
2008 Building alterations to the Birkenhaus, including two double guest rooms and one romantic suite; Birkenhaus link to Landhaus via a glazed passageway. Landhaus also received a stunning upgrade in the form of the Kaiser suite, which contains two bedrooms, one living area, an infrared sauna and lots of extras – all covering an area of approx. 125 m² (over two floors). Expansion of staff housing, construction of the salt water pool.

The whole area in front of the hotel was upgraded, and a ‘city wall’ was built, leading to the creation of further rooms as well as the expansion of access for deliveries. During the course of this work, the offices were also extended and refurbished.

Below the Lärchenhof – approx. four minutes on foot – we built the superb Lärchenhof Châlet with its chic yet cosy ambience. In addition, some of the junior suites at the Schlösslhof were transformed into deluxe junior suites with spacious bathrooms, and the Lärchenhof guest rooms had a face-lift.

Extension/renovation of the Landhaus to form two deluxe family suites and a deluxe romantic suite, plus bathroom refurbishments in some of the Landhaus studios and apartments.
2013 To our great delight, owner Martin Unterrainer was successful in his bid to take over the Hundsbichl farmstead, and incorporate it into the Lärchenhof holiday complex.

Reconstruction and renovation work took place during the off-season (some of the Landhaus studio apartments were refurbished).
2014 Another beautiful Lärchenhof Châlet was built (approx. four minutes away on foot), our new underground car park was extended by two parking spaces and the foundations laid for a new ski school office and Anmar Sports shop.

And not to forget our younger guests – we designed a fabulous new children's area that will be located beside the playground.

In the main Lärchenhof building, one double and one single room were converted into two new Lärchenhof deluxe studios. These now offer a fusion of comfortable modern living and Tyrolean Gemütlichkeit.

Modern units were added to the kitchen with a new induction hob, bain-marie, food warmer, hotplate and servery.

The Birkenhaus unveiled a new shopping opportunity – check out the latest collections by exclusive traditional Salzburg clothing company Gössl!

The Anmar sports shop and the ski school office moved into their new premises.

We started work on our sauna area extension, and opened the new multi-sensory event sauna.
2016 Our new sauna garden with spectacular mountain views was completed. It is accessed via the multi-sensory sauna and an approx. 30 m long escalator. Our total spa area now covers 3,500 m².

A family of alpacas moved to the Lärchenhof’s Hundsbichl Alm.

New guest rooms were added to the Landhaus, and existing ones renovated. In addition, all the double rooms in the main building were turned into deluxe double rooms.
2017 Expansion of the offices. The hotel bar including the winter garden was modernised, the terrace was extended. 2 of the outdoor tennis courts got a new top slide surface, a boules alley was built.
